I remember that story! The guy was an elemental. As an elemental he had some sort of bond with other people to draw lifeforce, which made the partner age differently. The girl was only "sometimes" a vampire, when she was in danger or whatever, the rest of the time she was a normal girl (ate normal food), but she only aged when she was in one form or the other (forgot which).
