That's millenials trying to rewrite history, at that time videogames were only experienced by a selected few, the vast majority lived normal lifes, maybe watching a few cartoons while ostracizing nerds.
Ocarina of Time was the greatest game at the time, and 8 millions are a lot for such small installbase, but many never even heard of it until the whole retro nostalgia crap started, that's when suddenly everyone had a childhood full of cartoons and videogames, every single kid had the exact same childhood.
I know quite a few that went over this transformation, when I met them I constantly brought up the only thing I ever knew, videogames,and none of them even had heard of most games I played, "gamer" was an insult, now their rooms are full of toys and games, it seems they are trying to fill a void that never existed
